Couple celebrate their $985,000 Lotto win with $8 bottles of champagne - because they say they 'wouldn't know the difference'

  • The pair, in their 70s, celebrated their newfound riches with $8 champagne
  • They will buy around the world tickets to 'tick some things off their bucket list'

A couple in their 70s have won nearly a million dollars in the lottery - but their first purchase showed not much would be changing for the self-described 'battlers'.

The wife told Perth Now the pair had indulged in two $8 bottles of champagne to celebrate their win of $985,000.

'Some things will never change, we'll always be battlers,' she said.

'We wouldn't know the difference between fancy champagne and the $8 bottle anyway.'

The Perth couple, who live in Padbury, say they have had a far from easy life, but would be spending their winnings on a trip around the world.

They say the trip would help them do the things they'd always wanted to, but there was not much else they wanted.

'When you've battled your whole life you don't expect something like this to happen,' the husband told the paper.

The elderly couple took more than a week to check their winning ticket.

The winning numbers were: 25, 44, 41, 1, 11, 22 and the supplementary numbers: 9, 23.

The pair, aged in their 70s, had celebrated their win with champagne worth only $8 a bottle, because they 'wouldn't know the difference'
