A Glasgow community garden has received £10,000 to help grow their project after winning a donation from betting firm, Multilotto.

Based in the east end of the city, the Shettleston Community Growing Project (SCGP) were one of hundreds of good causes nominated for the fund, which was set up to give a proportion of Multilotto’s profits to good causes around the country.

Established in 2009, the charity project aim to help people live healthier lifestyles and provides space for locals to grow their own food in their community allotment, which was once a derelict lot.

And winning this donation comes at an important time for the charity, as their project co-ordinator Marion Bates is about to retire – having been with the project since day one, Marion is keen to see the funding used for a number of on-going projects.

“I am overwhelmed at the generosity of Multilotto’s donation and delighted it’s come before I retire – now I really can leave on a high note,” explained Marion.

“We support a lot of families and this number is constantly increasing as more people show interest in growing their own food and living a healthier lifestyle.

“This makes funding such as this so very important to us and it will enable us to continue our work supporting people in the local community.”

The money awarded to SCGP will help unemployed volunteers gain vital skills and also enable the charity to teach more people how to grow their own healthy food, as well as maintain and upkeep the community garden.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response to the call out across Scotland, and it’s been great reading about all of the fantastic people and good causes that are in the area,” said Andrew Clarke, head of communications at Multilotto, who presented SCGP with their cheque.

“We’re absolutely delighted to present them with a £10,000 donation on behalf of Multilotto towards their ongoing work in Glasgow.”
