Sports Briefs: Valkyries headed to the WWCFL final

For the sixth time in team history, the Saskatoon Valkyries are headed to the Western Women’s Canadian Football League final after defeating the Calgary Rage 30-6 in the Western Conference final on Saturday.

Receivers Olivia Woo and Ricki Obed, and quarterback Alex Eyolfson each scored a touchdown, while kicker Carly Dyck added three single-point converts and three field goals.

The Valkyries will face their provincial rivals, the Regina Riot, in the final after the Riot won 45-9 over the Edmonton Storm on Sunday in the Prairie Conference final.

Saskatoon and Regina have met twice previously in the regular season, with the Riot coming out on top on both occassions, winning 28-7 and 21-16.

The WWCFL final is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Leslie Blyth elected new Sask Sport Inc. Chair

Having served on the Sask Sport Inc. board of directors since 2016, Leslie Blyth was elected as chair of the sports federation at the organization’s AGM on Saturday.

Blyth replaced outgoing chair, Darren Wilcox, who will remain on the board in the position of past chair.

In other executive elections, Elan Ballantyne was appointed as vice chair of Saskatchewan Lotteries; Al Dyer was named as vice chair of the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation; Dale Reed was selected as vice chair of Sport; and Kenric Exner was picked as secretary treasurer.

New members elected to the board include: Jessie Buydens, Carol Chernishenko, Angella Pinay, Josh Shankowsky, and Murray Stroeder.
