ICE add a scoring Connor to mix

The Kootenay ICE this morning added another key piece to re-building a winning hockey club, selected second overall in the Western Hockey League (WHL) 2017 Bantam Draft at the Deerfoot Inn in Calgary.

The ICE selected Wainwright, Alta. product Connor McClennon, a 5ā€™8ā€, 156 lb centre who tallied 45 goals and 54 assists in 30 games last season with the Pursuit of Excellence H.A. Bantam Prep club.

After winning the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft Lottery, the Prince Albert Raiders used the first-overall pick to select defenceman Kaiden Guhle (Sherwood Park, Alta./OHA Edmonton).

Alberta led all provinces with 11 players selected in the first round, followed by B.C. with six players, Saskatchewan with three players and Manitoba with two players.

By position, 15 forwards, six defenceman and one goaltender were selected in the first round.

A record 13 players were selected from Canadian Sports School Hockey League teams in the first round. The remaining rounds of the Bantam Draft are underway.

Players eligible for the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft are 2002-born players residing in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
